Jkuat students union had recently taken a case against the administration which they say was on the verge of committing a fraudulent scheme. The universities administration gazetted a notice in the Kenyan daily newspapers that each student was to pay 5200 for damages caused during the strike. This would amount to a figure of around 78 million.
This according to views of most of the jkuat students is an oppressive act since the damage caused was mainly broken windows and the amount stated is an exaggeration.
However the court injunction that they were fighting for failed and was thus not issued .The court ordered that the students pay the stated amount of 5200 .
High court has declined to issue orders stopping Jomo Kenyatta University Of Agriculture And Technology from charging each student at Juja campus 5,200 shillings each for damages resulting from a recent students’ strike.
This was after 103 students led by Paul Njuguna moved to court seeking orders to stop the decision by JKUAT school management board. While delivering the ruling, Justice Weldon Korir further directed the students to abide by the school decision until the case is concluded. The judge further assured the students that in the event they win the case then the court will then order a refund.
The case will be heard on 8th December 2014
